ABOUT CAMERATA NOVA

“You never know what you’re going to get…”

Camerata Nova is a vocal group without fear, performing Renaissance, Indigenous-infused and contemporary music. Often singing a cappella, the group also enjoys accompaniment from didgeridoos, crystal bowls, all kinds of percussion, and/or early instruments. Since 1996, they continue to push the envelope, offering authentic early music performances, premieres of Manitoba compositions and an eclectic array in between. Camerata Nova has issued four CDs: Camerata Nova, Mystica, Nova Noël and Camerata Nova Live: Christmas in Early America, as well as a DVD Wa Wa Tey Wak (Northern Lights). Camerata Nova is led by a quartet of extraordinary individuals: Artistic Director and Resident Composer Andrew Balfour, and Curators/Conductors Mel Braun, Vic Pankratz and John Wiens.

Our Mission

To perform early, contemporary and Indigenous-infused vocal chamber concerts for local, national and international audiences, offering excellence, experimentation and collaboration. We express the Prairie urban reality, we give our audiences the opportunity to learn about and experience early music and we work to build engagement both within our group and with the community.

Our Vision

Camerata Nova continues to evolve in our imaginative, risk-taking, quirky way. Our musical pillars remain early, contemporary and Indigenous-infused music but we can enjoy straying from the path… Our strengths are innovative programming, collaboration and community (we are family). Through professional artistry and management, we are widely known for our ability to take the choral experience to a new level, using musical and, at times, theatrical and visual design to engage our audience, live or digitally, in a profound, surprising experience. Camerata Nova reaches up, reaches out but its roots are deep in Prairie soil.
